Types of Roofs

There are many different styles and materials that can be used for roofing, and every area of the country is going to have its own preferences depending on weather conditions, real estate trends, and costs. Here’s a rundown of the most common roofing options you’ll find here in Atlanta:

Common Roof Design Styles in Atlanta

When we talk about design style, we’re referring to the actual shape of your roof. This is important information if you’re looking into a new construction or making structural changes to your existing roof. Here are a few of the most popular construction designs for roofs in Atlanta:

  • Gable Roof. This is a design you’re most likely to see here in Atlanta because it provides a number of advantages. In terms of weather resistance, it offers great drainage and protection against high winds. It’s also budget-friendly, and allows homeowners to enjoy an attic space and better ventilation. The only downside is that it’s a fairly simple-looking design that some homeowners say lacks character.

  • Hip Roof or Hipped Roof. Hipped Roofs have pitched surfaces on all sides of the roof to create a highly wind-resistant and strong construction. Depending on the layout of your home, Hipped Roofs can be combined with Gable Roofs to give your home a more aesthetically-interesting appearance.

  • Mansard Roof. Unlike the unassuming Gable or Hip Roof, a Mansard Roof is highly stylistic. This was a design feature popular in the late 19th and early 20th century and can still be found on classic homes here in Atlanta. The good thing about this style of roof is that it was invented in the time before central heating and cooling systems. So, it’s designed to naturally circulate the airflow in your home. You’ll also enjoy a roomier attic with options for windows, which can even be converted into an additional living space. But, with that flat roof, it’s not the most weather-resistant roof option available.

  • Flat Roof or Low Pitch Roof. This is a popular design style for commercial spaces such as warehouses, shopping centers, hotels, and more. There are a variety of benefits for business owners, such as low-cost construction and maintenance and easy access to HVAC systems. And, while this style is affordable and practical for business purposes, it’s not reserved only for commercial spaces! If you’ve ever dreamed of having a rooftop deck, a low pitch roof could be the solution. Flat roofs are also popular with modern design aesthetics.

Roof materials

Once you’ve landed on a specific rooftop design, it will be time to select your materials. Like with the structure of your roof, there are many different options to choose from, some better suited to Atlanta than others:

  • Asphalt Shingle. Asphalt Shingles are some of the most popular roof materials on the market, not only here in Atlanta but all over the US. That’s because they’re affordable, wind-resistance, and easy to maintain. That being said, they may not be as durable or long-lasting as other types of shingles, so you may end up paying more in repairs and shingle replacement than other options.

  • Tile Shingles. Terracotta tiles are a longer-lasting and more aesthetically pleasing alternative to asphalt shingles. And, because of their thermal characteristics, they can even help with temperature regulation in your home. But, there’s a reason they’re more common in drier regions of the US: hailstorms and tropical storms can crack or break these types of shingles.

  • Slate Shingles. Slate shingles are made from gorgeous natural stone, which makes them a great choice from a design standpoint. And, they easily outlast many other roof materials, making them a great long-term investment. The only downside of slate roofing is the cost.

  • Metal Roof. Metal is a very practical option for Atlanta. It’s long-lasting, very weather-resistant, and will fare well with humidity. That being said, not all homeowners enjoy the look of a metal roof, or the noisiness of this material during storms.
